Middle East, July 2000 part 5: England

London was just a tad strange after dealing with the land of Arabia for so long! All the signs were in English, people drove on one side of the road (albeit the "other" side), you could order a burger... And the tourists! London's population must quadruple in size over the summer. To go from the non-touristy time of year in the Middle east to the touristy time of year in London was somewhat overwhelming! I had an amusing time just people watching, never mind actually seeing the sights. We met one of Beck's cousins and had a quick tour of the Trafalgar Square/Westminster Abbey area, then went on a long walking tour the next day. We wore our feet out! We spent several hours working our way to Tower Bridge, and it took us about three hours of consistent high-pace walking to make it back to the hostel! Then we had to grab our packs and run for the train. We were quite happy to have the scenery "walking" past us for a change!

After an amusing train ride (we were directed to the wrong terminal and got on the slow train that only goes partway to our final destination... Thankfully, Thames Trains paid for a taxi ride the rest of the way.), we arrived at Beck's grandmother's house (known as Smoke Acre) and were pampered for the next week! Lots of fun touring around Great Bedwyn... and playing with black and white film.

We managed a few trips, of course. Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath, Avebury, and more...

And in the end... we still had to go home! Neither one of us were really prepared for it, or even really wanted to go home, but you have to come home to go away again. It was a memorable trip and a bucket-load of fun. Next!

See you on the road!
